Thiruttu Payale buys ATM!

By Behindwoods News Bureau.
October 29, 2007

If there is one movie that has toiled to see the light of the day, it has to be Azhagiya Tamil Magan. This movie, initially unsure of its Deepavali release is cruising towards it, and has left no stone unturned to ensure a smooth sailing. Its original distributors Pyramid Saimira withdrew a few days ago fearing a legal wrangle the producer was caught in.

Azhagiya Tamil Magan
Hardly had that issue died had the next one cropped up. This one was by the producers themselves. The issue is about changing the music composer for the background score of the film. This is a big one as Sabesh–Murali replaced A R Rahman because of the delay the latter caused in composing the music. With this, the project is sailing smooth and is ready for the censors.

The Chennai rights has been sold for a record price, initially Vijay's father S.A. Chandrasekhar was holding the Chennai rights of the movie but now news is out that it has been sold to Kalpathi Agoram, the producer of Thiruttu Payale.

Once the trailer and song sequences are telecast on the satellite channels, it is definitely going to create ripples among Vijay’s fans. According to the producer this film is going to be the best. They are planning to release 400 prints world wide. Lets hope this film should be a super hit.

Vijay reiterates his stance

By Behindwoods News Bureau.
October 29, 2007

Ilaya Thalapathy Vijay through his fan club has been delivering many welfare activities to the needy and the underprivileged. As a part of such activity, he was at Thiruvannamalai yesterday and was distributing benefit schemes worth Rs 5 lakhs at a function held there. Crowds thronged the venue despite the heavy incessant downpour.
Vijay

While speaking at the meeting, he said, "The very mention of Thiruvannamalai reminds me of super star Rajini's film Annamalai. While I was seeking an acting career, when my father asked me to act out a scene, I mouthed Rajini sir's dialogues from Annamalai and got a chance". To a poser on him being called the next super star, he continued his stance as usual and said, "I am glad to hear it. But only one person has the distinction of being called the Super Star and that is only Rajnikanth".

He asked the crowd to extend their patronage to his forthcoming film Azhagiya Tamil Magan. Later heeding to the crowd's wishes, he sang a song from Pokkiri and entertained them.

ATM gets ready to rock for Diwali!

By Moviebuzz | Saturday, 27 October , 2007, 16:30

Good news! All issues regarding Vijay's Azhagiya Tamil Magan, has been sorted out. Now Pyramid Saimira and 'Swargachitra' Appachan says that there were no issues between them and things have been blown out of proposition.

Producer 'Swargachitra' Appachan told Sify.com: "ATM is 100 percent releasing for Diwali-2007. A.R Rahman is completing the re-recording and mixing. The film will be censored by October 31, and it will release for Diwali."

Added Appachan: "The music of the film is rocking the charts. In five days since the audio release, it created a new record sales and everybody loves the songs. Once the songs and trailer are shown on the channels (after censor), it will do even better."

Appachan says that ATM is going to be Vijay's best film, as it is racy and edge-of-the-seat. Says Appachan: "We are going to release 350 to 400 prints of the film worldwide, and I'm sure it is going to be a super hit."

Sabesh-Murali covers for Rahman

By Behindwoods News Bureau.
October 26, 2007

Amidst continuing confusion of whether it might make it to Deepavali, Azhagiya Tamil Magan team has been working round the clock to wrap it up and present it to Vijay's fans for the festival season. Few special effects, color corrections and graphics are pending in addition to background score.

There seems to be some financial trouble too, which insiders feel will be resolved just in time.

As everyone is aware of, A R Rahman scores music for the film and the songs tuned in by him are already a rage with the youth. There were also reports that the maestro had started working on the re-recording at his studio in Chennai. But now comes the news that the mantle has been passed over to Sabesh & Murali. Rahman's schedule being tight as usual, would have meant a delay in the proceedings.
Azhagiya Tamil Magan

Hence to enable a timely release, the crew after getting the permission from Rahman and South Indian film musicians Association, has sought the help of Sabesh and Murali to help them with the background score. The musician duo also seems to have agreed.

Rahman or the ATM crew could not be reached to confirm the news.

ATM in trouble again?

By Moviebuzz | Thursday, 25 October , 2007, 09:38

Will Vijay's Azhagiya Tamil Magan release for Diwali 2007? Uncertainty looms large, as rumour mill has it that Pyramid Saimira, the distributors of the film has pulled out of it, creating shockwaves in the industry.

The grapevine has it that Pyramid Saimira has written a letter to Tamil Film Producers council that they do not want to be associated with ATM, as the producer is unlikely to solve his financial problems before Diwali.

Added to that producer `Swargachitra' Appachan is running from pillar to post as by the time the film was complete, he has run into a deficit! Vijay's father S.A Chandrasekhar has also told him that he has to clear the star's salary balance at the time of release.

Meanwhile no theatre booking for ATM is happening, and most of the theatres are now switching over to other films. At the same time the post-production work of the film, re-recording and mixing is going on in full swing at A.R Rahman's studio.

Vijay's Kuruvi spreads its wings

By Behindwoods News Bureau.
October 24, 2007

With the news about the audio release of Azhagiya Tamil Magan still fresh in the air and rumors about the movie’s release date still dilly dallying, Vijay’s next venture with Dharani titled Kuruvi has already started.

A huge and expensive set has been erected at the MGR Film City campus.

Sources close to the unit say that it has been constructed for a 40-day shoot; but has hinted that it was not for a song. The huge set, for such a long schedule indicates that a major portion of the movie is to be shot there.

Kuruvi has special significance as it is being produced by Udhayanidhi, son of MK Stalin, and directed by Dharani with musical score by Vidyasagar. Trisha plays Vijay's leading lady, and that she got the role after much deliberation is noteworthy. Wishing the Ghilli team all success in their second outing. The audiences are waiting!

ATM – Music Review : Behindwoods

He had just delivered one of the biggest audio blockbusters of recent times in India, Sivaji. He is joining hands with Vijay again after the Udhaya fiasco. Never has he been tested more to cater to the Ilayathalapathy fans. And to make it even more interesting, he has a new director to work with. Will Allaha Rakha Rahman deliver?

Ella Pughazhum - A R Rahman, Lyrics: Vaali

Electrifying guitar, pumping percussions, inspiring lyrics and an overwhelming voice. What else can someone ask for, in an opening song?

Well, there are certain Rahman songs which leave you with a smile on your face, by the time it ends, with the adrenalin rush refusing to get out of you. This one is of that kind. Should we say anything more?

Vijay's fans are already celebrating, dancing in the aisles.

Take that, says the master.

Ponmagal Vandaal - Aslam, Ember Rap, Lyrics: Aalangudi Somu

A fascinating retune, interspersed with rap giving an interesting dimension to the already timeless classic. In fact, Ember Rap is the icing on the cake. Loops are familiar but the harmony is awesome. Don’t miss the sign off. Rahman seems to have taken a liking towards rap these days and is doing a fantastic job at it, hope purists aren’t complaining.

Caution, Maestro at work!

Nee Marilyn Monroe - Benny, Dayal, Ujjainee, Lyrics: Na. Muthukumar

Takes off right from where “Ponmagal Vandaal” left. An enchanting humming by Ujjainee sets the mood perfectly for a sizzling swinger. Rahman has experimented with techno sounds before, but the mixing this time is unique, mellowing it down a bit for the Indian taste. Na.Muthukumar has tried out some really naughty lines ala Vaali - very youthful lyrics. Benny’s voice definitely adds to it all.

Valayapatti – Naresh Iyer, Ujjayinee, Madhumita, Lyrics: Na. Muthukumar

A song in praise of the heroine’s beauty by the hero. A folk and qawwali fusion with foot tapping beats, in this yet another experimental number by Rahman, is all set to keep Vijay’s fans away from their seats. Might need couple of hearing for some, to fall in love with this one, but wait till it actually hits the silver screen, Vijay might very well have a ball. Na.Muthukumar shines, Naresh rules and the girls rock.

Kelamal Kayile – Sriram Parthasarthy, Saindhavi, Lyrics: Thamarai

The only melody in the album, lilting to say the least, though with a familiar rhythm pattern. Sriram and Saindhavi’s voice elevate the song to a different level altogether. This is one song that is sure to grow on the listeners. Thamarai’s lyrics do lend a different flavor. Something Vijay’s movies have not seen in a long time.

Madhuraikku Pogathadee – Benny, Dayal, Archith, Dharshana, Lyrics: Pa. Vijay

A typical folk number, reminds you of the Shahul Hameed-Rahman combo of the Kizhakku Cheemayile days. Benny is sure to go places with his voice. Pa. Vijay’s lyrics strike the right chord. A song that’ll cater to the B and C centers. Watch out for this, if choreographed efficiently, might well take off!!

Verdict:

Now coming back to the question with which we started off this review. Thrown few challenges, great men are always certain to give it their best shot. Rahman has just about managed to do that. Delving on different genres, he has served variety within the limited space available. “Madras Mozart”, is clearly in form.

On the flip side, typical of a Rahman album, there is couple of songs that might take some time to catch on, but nevertheless, one which every Rahman and Vijay fan will be happy possessing.

ATM soars!

By Behindwoods News Bureau.
October 23, 2007

Finally the audio of the much-awaited Azhagiya Tamil Magan is out and as soon as it hit the stands it disappeared from the shelves. Audio stores were open early and CD’s and cassettes sold like hot cakes. Reports suggest yesterday was a great day for Vijay’s fans as the audio of the ATM was out.

According to the reports the response to the audio ranges from great to mediocre and that isn’t new for Rahman’s albums. It is an assorted album that has something for everyone.

Exact sales figures are not available yet but media reports suggest record sales. With the movie’s release date still remaining a mystery, the audio comes as the only form of solace for Vijay’s fans. Look out for our audio review, that’ll be up soon.

ATM confirmed for Diwali!

By Moviebuzz | Tuesday, 23 October , 2007, 09:32

Now that the audio is released, Vijay's Azhagiya Tamil Magan will positively make it for Diwali. The producer 'Swargachitra' Appachan has preponed the release by a day from November 8 (Diwali Day) to November 7, stumping all the doubting people in the trade who were saying that the film will be postponed!

Appachan after consulting a leading Kerala astrologer has gone for November 7, a more auspicious day being Pradosham. ATM is likely to open worldwide with around 410 prints.

The re-recording of ATM is going on at A.R Rahman's Panchathan Record-Inn in Chennai, along with the composition of the stage adaptation of JRR Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings" music. Rahman has promised to complete the entire re-recording and mixing by November 1, so that it can be censored by November 2 or 3.

Pyramid Saimira, the distributors of ATM is going to start a pre-release campaign, once the music of the film becomes more popular.

Azhagiya Tamil Magan - Any time music
IndiaGlitz [Tuesday, October 23, 2007]

Among the combinations in Kollywood, Vijay-A R Rahman is rather intriguing as the idioms that define the duo are totally different, and twain looked unlikely to meet. To be sure, Rahman had indeed scored music for a Vijay starrer previously. That was the unsung Udaya, a film that was laid low by many problems. Except the eponymous title track (and was certainly beguilingly brilliant), none of the numbers hardly had anything to redeem or remember. Vijay, in the meanwhile, had become the commercial star and this kind of films demanded ‘a’ kind of music, which if it came from Rahman would be disappointing. Rahman’s musical methods are believed to suit a different canvas.

So before settling down to listen to the Azhagiya Tamil Magan songs, the feeling was rather mixed, and the belief was that something, or rather someone, had to give. But after a single listen, we are happy to report that Rahman has packaged Vijay’s musical needs in a different flavor. But one that doubtless will have the Ilaya Thalapathi’s fans dancing in the aisles with gusto. Rahman’s genius lies here in the fact that he has not compromised his core constituency.

The six numbers, including a remixed one, carry that unique Rahman stamp ---- rhythmic razzmatazz, quaint harmonies and experimental interludes all creating a symphonic sounds cape.

1 Ella Pugazh

The title track in a mass Tamil movie is microcosmic to the overall genre. It has to have elevating lyrics. It has to have simple but catchy beats. It has to set the tempo for the scrip to feed on. But Rahman here bucks the trend. He provides all the necessary rhythms. He has, in a sense, redefined the ‘intro song with a tempo that is reflective without being ponderous. Rahman’s own vocals — in typical nasal high-pitched twang ---- provide a further newness. The beats are not all-out or in-your-face, but carry forward Vaali’s undoubtedly exalting and ennobling ideas in attractive packets of snappy strums and bewitching beats. It is not impossible to imagine what the reaction of Vijay’s countless fans whenever the word ‘thalapathi’ is uttered in the lyric.

2 Pon Magal Vandhal

Rahman, among the music directors, had steadfastly avoided the abhorrence of remixes. The one time he had to attempt that, Rahman did the honorable thing of re-tuning it (Thottal Poo Malarum in New), rather than add some high-octane rhythms to the original and preen to the world as if it is indeed a ‘new original’, so to speak. But here settles for the straight forward remix; the only liberty he takes here is a bizarre rap interlude. Aslam has sung with his all his energy, and Embar’s rap bit also works. But remixes are not Rahman’s.

3) Nee Marilyn Monroe

This is Boys song meeting Anniyan. Both in terms of the musical trope as well in terms of drift of the language. Full of city youth’s Esperanto, the words of Na Muthukumar (almost in bilingual with liberal use of ‘Party’, ‘Saturday night’,’ scanning’) will have the dancing feet tapping incessantly. Benny Dayaland Ujjaini sings with that stylized lilt that such songs are expected to sound. The chorus pattern is interesting and provides a defining staccato feel. The way ‘Nee Marilyn Monroe’ is enunciated is certainly very alluring and provides all the right impact for the song.

4)Valaiyapatti

Imagine a rambunctious Tamil folk madly cohabiting. And now, as if for a lark, throw a bit Carnatic nuggets. What do you get? A song that defies imagination. It takes musical effrontery to conjure such mix n’ match song. Rahman’s brilliance is in pulling this amazing number, on which explanatory words are ineffective. Naresh Iyer, like a stone waller is being asked to play the pinch-hitting role in cricket, has been asked to let his curly hair down and sing with uninhibited effulgence. Naresh does and provides the song the perfect patchwork. The twist into the by-lanes of Carnatic ragas (like Bageshwari, Saraswathi and Neelambari) is sheer genius. Ujjaini and Madhumitha’s voices climb the higher octaves with felicitous zeal while Muthukumar’s lyrics again match the mood. One for the album of mind!

5) Kelammal Kayile

Saindhavi sounds from just the upper part of the throat. It is a style that is fraught with risks. But it works to all our amazement. Pray why? The curious musical arrangement of Rahman and the male vocal of Sriram Parthasarathy, perhaps the most talented and bankable of young singers around. The pattern of the number is difficult to grapple immediately. But as ever, it takes hold of you slowly and before long you are captivated and traveling inside those lovely musical loops that every Rahman experience gives us. Thamarai’s words carry that love emotion quite effortlessly.

6) Maduraikku Pogathadee

Does a mass rhythm song have to be gross and cheesy, and sound soulless? Need not be. Rahman shows how. This is a folksy number that combines the resonance of Goanese beats, but is full of robust energy and rhythms that immediately transports the listeners to, say, rural Madurai. The singers Benny Dayal, Archith and Darsana voice Pa Vijay’s inspired words with an élan and ease that come to those who want to prove a point. The natural drift into the rural symphony is a stroke of musical genius.

And Rahman is certainly one.

Rahman rocks in ATM - Rediff

Saraswathy Srinivas
October 23, 2007 16:25 IST

After the huge success of Sivaji, A R Rahman is back with another Tamil album, a rarity these days. Naturally much hope has been pinned on the music score for Azhagiya Tamizh Magan (ATM) starring Ilayathalapathy Vijay, who is described as the heir to the 'Super Star'. Interestingly, the heroine of this film is also Shriya, Rajni's heroine in Sivaji.

Bogged down by heavy financial setbacks, Malayalam film producer Sargachithra Appachan has turned to Tamil films for a lifeline. Azhagiya Tamizh Magan with Vijay as the hero marks his foray into Tamil filmdom.

The maverick composer himself has lent his voice to the opening number introducing the hero Ellapugazhum. The piece which is also the title track has lyrics by Valee who draws inspiration from Vijay's sobriquet Ilaya Dalapathy. The lyrics project not a larger than life of the protagonist but a logical and believable one. The smooth flow of Ballaielakka in Sivaji is missing here. The forceful chorus as a parallel track gives it added energy. Still instrumental pyrotechniques and Rahman's powerful and aggressive rendition changing the pitch and timbre make this a track suitable for the palate of today's youth and die-hard Vijay fans.

It is a pity that the gifted Rahman has also fallen into the remix trap. Ponmagal Vanthal is a remix of the popular song, Ponmagan Vanthan, written by Alangudi Somu and rendered by veteran singer T M Sounderarajan (from the film, Sorgam, a Sivaji Ganesan-starrer in 1970). Rendered by Benny Dayel and Ujjayinee, this track with modern sound designs like rap and English lyrics, is the only jarring note in this otherwise rocking number.

The following Nee Marilyn Monroe [Images] has all the potential to be a sure-shot chartbuster. Arranged in Western style the number begins and ends in a light-hearted manner with giggling and pleasing alapana by Ujjayinee. The fire in Ujjayinee's voice is perfect foil for Benny Dayel's nasal twang. Na Muthukumar's lyrics like one day mattum girl-friend aaga varaya? (Will you be my girlfriend for just one day?) project the ephemeral nature of modern day love.

Nee nadaswaram pola vandha (valayappatti) by Naresh Iyer, Ujjayinee and Madhumitha is fast paced yet melodious. The lenghthy swara spells give it a classical touch. Naresh Iyer's fast paced rendition in full steam is well complemented by the teasing and playful velvetty vocals of Ujjayinee and Madhumitha. Kudos to Na Muthukumar for his lyrics; simple and full of quaint imagery.

Kelamal kayyile by Sriram Parthasarathy and Sainthavi is another melodious number in the same genre as Nee nadaswaram pola vandha with a Hindusthani touch in certain places. The song has an old world charm. Thamarai's lyrics are as usual oozing with soft sentiments. But deployment of various instruments make the lyrics get drowned and lose clarity.

Rahman signs off with Madhuraikku pogathadee by Benny Dayel, Archith and Darshana, a song and dance scenario with the newlyweds being received into the family. It is a folk number with fast rhythm and splendid chains of nadaswaram sallies. Pa Vijay's lyrics are simple yet remarkable with many layers of meaning; the lass is warned against going to Madhurai because the jasmine flowers there will cast eyes on her! Is there a more subtle way to describe a girl's beauty?

Rahman rocks once again.

ATM - Music Review

When maestros make music, it cannot be questioned. There can be no second opinions. The least that one can rate is ‘quite good’. There was a feel in me couple of years back that Rahman had lost his touch with Tamil cinema. Sillunu Oru Kaadhal and Sivaji changed my mindset. Rahman’s place in Tamil Cinema is irreplaceable. Now, the music of Swargachitra Appachan’s Azhagiya Thamizh Magan(ATM), reinstates this fact very clearly.

Starring Vijay, Shriya and Namitha, ATM has music by Isai Puyal A.R. Rahman. This album will sure be a treat for Rahman fans as well as Vijay fans. Moving away from the typical Vijay film’s music Rahman gives something extra ordinary that will satisfy all class of music lovers. The storm has just begun.

Ella Pugazhum Oruvan Oruvanukke

A.R. Rahman begins the album, packed with all punch and style. An inspirational song for youth interspersed with few lines of praises for the hero, nicely written by Vaali. The chorus that comes throughout the song is nice and the heavy instrumental pumps up the adrenalin. The hero of the song is however Rahman, who with the full throated singing especially towards the end (Maanavan Manadhu Vaithaal) makes a big impression that won’t leave you till you finish listening the album

Verdict: Classy intro for a mass hero

Rating: 9.3/10

Ponmagal Vandhal

Die hard Rahmaniacs may not appreciate this remix work of Rahman very much. But this remix version of the old song from Sivaji Ganesan’s sorgam, is something I feel like Rahman’s answer to those dozen remixes that come up every month in Kollywood. With excellent western mix(by Krishna Chetan) and the subtle rap that doesn’t harm your ears, it makes you realize how well remixes are handled by maestros. Aslam sings it simple and Ember Rap gives the right feel. And very nice mixing of TMS’s lines from the original song in the middle.

Verdict: Remix Reinvented

Rating: 9.2/10

Nee Marilyn Monroe

Completely tuned in western style with lots of English words thrown into the lyrics, this is yet another rocking song. Benny Dayal and Ujjayinee do a great job doing full justice to the tune. Benny's voice modulation is amazing, especially when he sings "Baby un DJ naan" just in the tone of DJs. The female humming in the opening and the second interlude is brilliant. The use of Indian style instruments shortly in the first interlude is also a brilliant fusion. The guitar that plays all along the song is simply superb.

Verdict: Western all the way

Rating: 9.5/10

Valayapatti Thavile

This song opens slowly with a nice prelude and then singing by Madhumitha . Slowly it picks up speed continuing at a constant pace. The thavil that beats throughout the song and the mild nadhaswaram bits that play every now and then, gives you the southern flavor which fuses with the well composed North Indian Qawali style of singing by Naresh Iyer and Madhumitha(and Ujjayinee??). There is also a brief jugalbandhi with quite a few instruments and jadhis in the interludes. A cool string instrument, not sure what it is, starts playing in second interlude and continues all along the second stanza. The intelligent use of different Ragas and swaras in the tune as per the lyrics is simply excellent work by Rahman, again a fusion of folk and carnatic. Naresh Iyer is as brilliant as ever.

Verdict: Fusion at its best

Rating: 9.8/10

Kettu Rasitha Paadal

An excellent melody with fast pace and great beats. Well, is that possible? With the maestro’s composing, anything is Its not a straight forward tune like Munbe Vaa, but little complicated like Sahana Saaral of Sivaji or Mellisaye of Mr.Romeo. The chorus of “Paarthum Paaramale Pogum Nerangale” in second interlude is out of the world, typical Rahman. Same with the case of “Kokilam Kokilam” line. Lyrics of Thamarai is an added plus, with brilliant imaginations like "Koondhal ennum yeni yeri muthamida aasaigal undu... Netri mooku udhadu endru irangi vara padigalum undu". The brilliant rendition by Saindhavi and Sriram Parthasarathy are feathers in the cap of Rahman’s great composition. A song that grows over after every listening.

Verdict: Rocking melody

Rating: 9.7/10

Maduraiku Pogadhadi

Listening to this song, one instantly goes back to the days of Kizhakku Chemmayile, when Tamil folk got its techno form from Rahman. Usage of good number of village percussions and instruments like Sitar and nadhaswaram gives this song a very ‘Song of this soil’ feel. You got to believe that it’s the same Benny Dayal of Marilyn Monroe song who has sung this folk song. A very versatile find by Rahman. Yet another surprise is Dharshana whose voice gives this peppy folk a tinge of western. Supporting vocals are very important in such songs and it’s adequately done.

Verdict: The techno folk

Rating: 9.1/10

Go and grab your audio CD right away… It’s worth a buy and listen.

ATM songs rock!

The glamorous song on screen is going to be Marlyn Monroe , which has full of English words and is peppy. The remix song Ponmagal Vandhal is also a scream!

On the whole, the reaction from Vijay fans is that the album rocks, and Rahman-Vijay combination will be a chartbuster, especially after the songs are telecast on the channels after the release of the film.

Vijay sports a ravishing look in Azhagiya Tamil Magan. 'Ilayathalapathi' is pairing with two top sensations in Kollywood, Namitha and Shriya in the movie. Music for Azhagiya... is by 'Isai Puyal' A.R. Rahman. Rahman, in addition to making all the six songs thoroughly enjoyable, has also worked at glorifying the yesteryear hit, 'Ponmagal Vandaal'. Azhagiya Tamil Magan, a Deepavali release has already begun its smooth ascent to the top.

'Ellapugazhum' is a thematic song. The charming melody, set at a uniformly pleasant tempo, sung by A.R. Rahman with apt lyrics, slides smoothly like honey to produce the desired effect.

The enthusiasm in 'Maduraikku Pogathadee' makes the first impression a strong and good impression. Sung by Benny Dayal, Dharshana and Archith, it sparkles with a freshness along with a novelty due to its occasional western beats.

'Ponmagal Vandaal', a remix, rekindles the same fondness and fascination one experienced while hearing the original. The effect is greatly enhanced by the trendy instrumentation and rap. The song comes in a combination of Ember Rap and Aslam's voices.

'Nee Marilyn Monroe' is sprightly in Benny Dayal and Ujjaiyini's voices with a fine balance in rhythm.

'Valayapatti' has an interesting application of classical music accompanied by a traditional set of instruments. Madhumitha, Naresh Iyer and Ujjayinee take equal credits in the rendition.

'Kelamal Kaiyile' progresses at a pace that attracts listeners. Why? Because of the understated simplicity and gracefulness in it.

Rahman rocks in 'Azhagiya Tamil Magan'!

IndiaGlitz [Friday, October 19, 2007]
Trust A R Rahman to come up with sizzling numbers.

After his sensationally rollicking show in 'Sivaji', which had the listeners dancing in the aisles, Rahman is back to his rhythmic best in Vijay's 'Azhagiya Tamil Magan'.

The film's audio is to be out only on October 22.

A teaser trailer of the film and some snatches of the audio track are already available on the net. The full track list of the songs is also available.

Having a look at them and listening to the vignettes, it is clear that raja of rhythms has delivered again.

The songs are catchy and carry with them agreeable ring of class and mass.

Going by what is available, the intro song seems to have been sung by the music wizard himself. There is also a re-tuned? version of the yesteryear hit -Pon Magal Vanthal.

The trailer too is impressive with Vijay looking very energetic and enterprising.

'Azhagiya Tamil Magan' is believed to feature Vijay, for the first time in his career, in a double role.

The film stars Shriya and Namitha as heroines.

Vijay to celebrate a mute Deepavali with Ajith

By Behindwoods News Bureau.
October 18, 2007

We are getting reports that this time around Vijay may have to be content with watching films of other stars with his Azhagiya Tamil Magan most likely to give it a miss this Deepavali. The movie's post-production and some visual effects works are still underway, and with A R Rahman yet to score the back ground music,
Vijay

Chances of ATM's release this festive season looks bleak. Perhaps, this is a first of sorts for Vijay, who seldom misses out on an opportunity like this.

Ajith's fans too are in for a disappointed as the Billa team and the distributors Saimira has decided against releasing it for the festive season to avoid a clash with ATM. With these two movies playing spoilsport, Deepavali this time around is turning out to be a damp squib with only Polladhavan ready to hit the theatres along with Vel, which is racing against time to make it on time. Not much to rejoice for Vijay's fans, the audio release should keep them occupied till then or will it end up adding to the curiosity? Let's wait and watch.

Is Shahrukh a poser for ATM?

By Behindwoods News Bureau.
October 16, 2007

There are reports coming in that ATM is finding it difficult to hit the screens for Deepavali, the reasons cited are delay in re-recording by A R Rahman. However, against all odds, the team seems determined to get the movie ready on time for the festive season. Their only competition comes in the form of Vel, with Billa getting delayed, they definitely don't want to let go off this opportunity.

Pyramid Saimira has bought the distribution rights for this movie and are eager to see a Deepavali release; they have also bought the Tamil dubbing rights for the Shahrukh Khan starrer Om Shanti Om that is to hit the screens on Deepavali.

Pyramid is planning to release the dubbed version of Om Shanti Om alongside the Hindi release with 40 prints all over Tamilnadu, banking on the fan base Shahrukh Khan enjoys in Tamilnadu.
Vijay

So is Shahrukh going to be a poser for ATM? "Of course not. This is a move to make the most of the festive season. The audience sectors for both the movies are quite different and shouldn't interfere in each other's way", says a trade analyst.

Well, who wouldn't like to see both – the Bollywood Badshah and the Kollywood Thalapathy create some fireworks this deepavali.

ATM - A Preview

Cast :Vijay , Shreya
Director :
Bharhathan
Music :
A.R.Rahman
Production :
Swargachitra Productions

The movie is produced by “Swagachitra Production Company” owned by producer Appachan this is his second film with actor Vijay after friends that was a block buster released in the year 2000

Debut director Barathan is directing the movie; he had worked as associate of director Dharani for movies like Dhil, Dhool and Gilli.

Azhigiye Tamil magan will mark a very important place in Tamil cinema because Actor Vijay is playing dual role for the first time in 15 years of his career.

This story is about guru and Prasad both played by actor Vijay the story is about one being a hooligan and the other a loyalist, their different enduring life styles and how they influence each other and also struggle against each other, the climax forms when the two characters collide with each other. The main problem being guru and his mental instabilities in dealing with his own problems forms the crux of the film.

It’s the first time that Shriya and Namitha are paired with Vijay in this film. This is Vijay's first film doing a dual-role (hero & villain).

The technical side of the film is very strong that includes fefsi vijayan the fight scenes alone has been shot for 50 days in Hyderabad and FeFsi Vijayan has done a wonderful job. The talented cinematographer Balasubramaniyan A.R.Rehman has composed the music. Songs are written by Vaali,Pa.Vijay and Tamarai.

By Behindwoods News Bureau.
October 15, 2007

Vijay fans were in for a disappointment on Monday when they flocked the audio shops expecting to get the CDs of Azhagiya Thamizh Magan. According to industry sources, the audio is expected to hit the stalls on the 22nd of October. It is likely to be released in Malaysia on the 19th. We hear that the delay is due to heavy plans involved in organizing an audio launch function.

Azhagiya Tamil Magan
Initially the team had planned to release the audio sans any function but felt it was needed, considering the expectations the movie has generated. And with Diwali fast approaching, they intend to somehow release the audio well in advance so as to keep the curiosity alive.

Sivaji has set the stage for the comeback of A R Rahman amongst Tamil audiences and ATM has raised the expectations even higher. Let's see if they get their timing right this time around. 30 days to Diwali!

By Moviebuzz | Tuesday, 09 October , 2007, 10:09 2007

Diwali is hardly a month (Nov 8) away, but our Tamil film producers are yet to get into the top gear. As of now those who have confirmed their releases are- Azhagiya Tamil Mahan, Kannanmoochi Yaennada, Polladhavan, Vel. Both ATM and Vel will be having grand audio launches in the next few days, to kick start their publicity campaigns.

Meanwhile it is now more or less certain that the two big B’s- Bheema & Billa will not make it for Diwali, as work on both the projects can’t be completed on time. They are now expected to clash on December 14 or 21 as Christmas releases, a good five weeks after the Diwali!

Meanwhile in Tamilnadu and Kerala, the topic of discussion among the trade is the stiff competition posed to Tamil films from Shah Rukh Khan’s Om Shanti Om(OSO), releasing worldwide with 2000 prints and Hollywood studio Sony Pictures first Bollywood film Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Saawariya with newcomers.

In Chennai city OSO is releasing in six screens including Sathyam big screen, while ATM is likely to release only in six screens, as they have dropped the earlier plans to go for a saturation release like Sivaji did with 15 screens! And in Kerala our Ilayathalapathy’s fort, SRK’s OSO is going to release the same number of prints as ATM! ATM and OSO are distributed in Tamilnadu and Kerala by the same distributor (Pyramid Saimira), which means they grab all good screens and together are a force to reckon with at the Diwali box-office.

At the same time Sony Pictures, who has tremendous clout among theatres in Tamilnadu and Kerala (Remember they distribute all Hollywood blockbusters like “Spiderman” series and other action movies?) are putting a lot of pressure on theatres to screen their Saawariyawhich they claim is Bobby, Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai ( mega hits in both the states) type love story!

In the fight between a south Indian corporate and a multinational, it is movies like Vel which gets caught in the crossfire. The Surya-Asin starrer has not got a single theatre in Kerala, and it looks like Vel will release in the state only two weeks after Diwali!

Namitha - Men on Top

By Moviebuzz | Saturday, 06 October , 2007, 11:54

"One thing I'll say about all my heroes is that- I love and respect them unconditionally" . The hot and happening actress Namitha opens her heart out to Moviebuzz in a garrulous mood sitting at her favourite corner table in Match Point at Taj Coromandel, Chennai.

Vijay - Very quiet, silent observer and patient. But when the camera starts rolling, he is a dynamo. I've heard from others earlier that he is an introvert but I differ to agree with that. In Azhagiya Tamizh Magan, we shot a song together at Phukhet Islands and it is for the first time that he takes off his shirt in a film in his career so far. He can be stylish without taking any effort and there is a scene in which he wears a white jacket and hat. He looks HOT! He has no airs of a superstar and is so down-to-earth and humble with everyone.

A cracker of a contest

THE HINDU

http://www.hindu.com/cp/2007/10/05/stories/2007100550210800.htm

Films Om Shanti Om, Saawariya, Azhagiya Tamil Magan, Vel, Lions for Lambs… it will be a clash of the titans this Diwali, says sreedhar pillai
Diwali, the festival of lights, is traditionally one of the most auspicious seasons to release a new film in Bollywood and Kollywood. Normally, only blockbusters hit the screen during this period. Diwali 2007 promises to be a cracker of a contest in Bollywood where Shah Rukh Khan’s Red Chillies-produced, Farah Khan-directed Om Shanti Om, which is the launch pad of Deepika Padukone, will compete with Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Saawariya, a love story that brings together two newcomers, Ranbir Kapoor, son of Rishi Kapoor, and Sonam Kapoor, daughter of Anil Kapoor. Bhansali’s favourites Salman Khan and Rani Mukherjee make a cameo appearance in Saawariya, the first Indian film being produced by a Hollywood major, Sony Pictures Entertainment.

Down South, in Kollywood, it was said that Diwali 2007 would witness the mother of all box-office battles when Kamal Hassan’s Dasavatharam, Vijay’s Azhagiya Tamil Magan, Vikram’s Bheema, Ajit’s Billa and Surya’s Vel would compete against one another. But with only two films confirming their release date (November 8), it looks like the face-off will be between Azhagiya Tamil Magan, directed by newcomer Bharathan, and Vel, directed by Hari.

Says a leading distributor: “It is good only two big Tamil films are releasing, as there is an acute shortage of theatres outside Chennai and overseas where Om Shanti Om and Saawariya have already booked the best of theatres screening Indian films.”

Likely releases

The other likely Diwali releases are smaller films such as the Pritviraj- Sathyaraj-Sandhya starrer Kannamoochi Enadaa, directed by Priya.V, Dhanush’s Pollathavan, directed by Vetrimaran, and Jeevan’s Machaikaran, directed by Tamilvanan. And the big Hollywood release is likely to be the Tom Cruise, Meryl Streep and Robert Redford drama Lions for Lambs, directed by Robert Redford. Industry analysts say it is going to be the biggest ever Diwali season, especially in a metro like Chennai, where Tamil, Hindi and English films do well. Says Abirami Ramanathan: “After many years, Diwali 2007 is going to be big in Tamil Nadu as Azhagiya Tamil Magan, Vel and Om Shanti Om clash. Added to that, people are just waiting to watch the superstars fight it out.

Remember after Sivaji, there has been no big hit; our audiences want to buy tickets only for movies featuring big stars.” Says Vinod, General Manager, Inox: “Already we are getting inquiries as to when the booking will open for Om Shanti Om and Azhagiya Tamil Magan!". Almost all theatres in Chennai are confident of their Diwali bookings.

Another record?

Meanwhile, there is a big buzz around the Bollywood biggies Om Shanti Om and Saawariya. The worldwide theatrical rights for Om Shanti Om have been purchased by the overseas distributor of Hindi films, Eros International controlled by Kishore Lulla, for a record Rs. 75 crore! The film is all set to create another record, the highest number of prints any Indian movie has released so far - 2000, with most of them in digital format. After the stupendous success of Chak De, Shah Rukh is the biggest Indian movie icon from Kashmir to Kanyakumari.

Pyramid Saimira, which has purchased Om Shanti Om’s Tamil Nadu-Kerala rights for the highest ever price paid for a Hindi film plans to open it big in 60 to 70 screens in both the States put together.

For Sony Pictures Entertainment, Saawariya is their first attempt at making an Indian film and marketing it worldwide through their network. Says Uday Singh, Managing Director, Sony Pictures India: “Saawariya is a lovely movie made by the master craftsman, Sanjay Leela Bhansali.

Saawariya also indicates Sony’s recognition of the importance of the Indian market and its desire to team up with the film industry in India.” Sony plans to release Saawariya worldwide with nearly 1,000 prints and is looking at the Indian Diaspora to make it popular.

With so many happenings in the world of cinema, Diwali 2007 promises to be a festival of star-spangled films for cineastes in Chennai.
